You may already know it’s important to floss your teeth at least once a day, but have you ever wonder why it’s so prominent in the dental world? There are many reasons why you should floss your smile every day, and our dentist, Dr. Jody W. Adams, is happy to explain to you and your smile why flossing is so vital in your everyday dental regimen.
First, flossing can help you have healthy and strong teeth. It removes from the crevices of your smile daily plaque, a harmful substance that attacks teeth and promotes cavities to grow. You could even suffer cavities on two teeth when plaque attacks in between. It’s important to remove plaque daily (at least 20 min after eating to help remove food particles) because after 48 hours, it hardens. After this, the only way to remove it is with a professional dental cleaning.
Second, flossing can help you stop your gums from bleeding, even though your gums probably bleed most when you floss. This is probably due to the fact you don’t floss very often and your gums haven’t built up resistance. Flossing removes bacteria from the gumline, and your body usually sends blood cells to the infected area to fight that bacteria and prevent infections. Your body won’t need to send the blood cells in the first place if you remove the bacteria once a day
Third, flossing can help you have a stronger and healthier body. Sounds crazy? Well, it’s true! The same plaque causing cavities can promote gum disease as well. This can be a serious issue for your smile and entire body. Gum disease has been linked to major health issues, such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. The more you floss, the better you prevent gum disease, leading to a healthier body protected from infections and disease.
