Tooth decay can befall you when poor oral hygiene practices encourage the natural bacteria living in your mouth to afflict a compromised area of tooth enamel. If you fail to seek professional dental care at Smile 2 Heart Dental, a significant amount of the tooth can be lost.

Sometimes an infected root can be treated with an endodontic procedure, such as a root canal. However, if a severe fracture has also occurred or an infected abscess develops in your gums, Dr. Jody W. Adams might advocate extracting all remnants of the tooth. This can dissipate pain and treat any potential infection.

When you’re ready, Dr. Jody W. Adams can help replace the tooth’s presence in your mouth with a dental bridge. This is appliance replicates the appearance and function of the original tooth. It is fused to a pair of crowns on each end. It will eventually anchor onto abutments that are formed from the two neighboring teeth.

Dr. Jody W. Adams forms the two abutments by removing the tooth enamel layer from each neighboring tooth. The dentin pillars surrounding the healthy interior of the teeth will later anchor the bridge in place.

A detailed impression will be created from the two abutments and the related teeth in the area. It will be sent to a dental lab to serve as a guide for creating your new bridge. Temporary crowns will then be cemented over each abutment to protect them while you await the completion of your new bridge.

When your bridge is ready, you will be called to schedule a second appointment. This session will be brief. Dr. Jody W. Adams will simply remove the temporary crowns and cement your new bridge firmly onto the abutments.
