When your pearly whites have issues with decay, patients are sometimes tempted to have the damaged tooth extracted rather than having it fixed by having a root canal. Our Smile 2 Heart Dental team prefers saving a tooth whenever possible.

A root canal is a valuable option to saving a tooth in Brigham City, Utah. How do you know if you might need a root canal to fix a tooth?

–The tooth hurts when hot or cold food or drinks touch it and long afterward.

–The tooth experiences an ongoing toothache which is increasingly painful.

–The tooth hurts every time you bite down on it or chew food.

A root canal is performed in several steps when saving a decayed tooth. First, Dr. Jody W. Adams will remove the infected tooth pulp. Then, the area will be completely cleaned and disinfected. Next, a rubberlike material called gutta-percha will fill be placed to seal and protect the space left behind. Finally, either a dental filling material will cover the gutta-percha or a crown will be placed over the tooth if the filling is too.

By saving your tooth instead of extracting it, you will help maintain your healthy smile. Dr. Jody W. Adams and our Smile 2 Heart Dental team in Brigham City, Utah are happy to help you with all of your smile care needs.
