Dental cavities (also known as tooth decay) are holes in your teeth brought on by the surrender of tooth enamel to sugary foods and plaque. It’s important to catch cavities early on to prevent the spread of bacteria and minimize your risk of gum disease and tooth loss. Here are three ways to tell if you have a cavity:

1. Pain

Cavities usually manifest themselves through tooth pain. The severity can range from a dull ache and tooth sensitivity to sharp, shooting pain whenever you chew or eat something particularly hot or cold.

2. Visible holes

The easiest way to know you have a cavity is the visibility of holes in your teeth. These holes are where the plaque on your teeth have completely worn away the enamel. Black, brown or white staining on the surface of your teeth is another indication of the presence of a cavity.

3. Dental checkups

It’s not always possible to know you have a cavity, especially in the early stages, which is why regular dental checkups are so important. Dr. Jody W. Adams can you straightaway if you’re experiencing any tooth decay.
